Can Dogs Laugh?
Anyone who thinks that dogs cannot laugh because they have no sense of humour should quickly be taught better. Because this does not correspond to the truth. Dogs can in fact be real jokers and funny companions. You just sometimes have to pay attention when dogs start to smile. The lips go up, the corners of the mouth pull back, and the tips of their teeth flash. They show this when they are content, feel comfortable and also when they are cheerful. So they evidently do have a sense of humour and can, in some situations, show their sweet smile.
Canine Joy of Life and Little Pranks
There is, for example, a dog that at home is actually not allowed on the sofa. He naturally keeps trying again and again to make it onto the sofa – but in vain. Until one day his person is watching an exciting film in the evening and, lost in thought, without paying attention to it, fusses over the animal and lies cosily with him on the sofa. She has completely forgotten that he is lying where he should not actually be lying. And what does the dog do? He smiles most contentedly and has his tummy fussed over with relish.
- Recognising a smile through relaxed facial features and flashing teeth
- Observing mischievous behaviour in everyday situations
- Fostering the bond through shared laughter and positive experiences
- Distinguishing between instinct and genuine canine humour
Or let us consider another situation: a dog that quietly and silently let himself be shut into the garden shed. At some point the family notices that one is missing, namely the dog. Then there is calling, whistling and searching for all it is worth, but nowhere is the playful four-legged friend to be found. Then, quite by chance, the person goes into the garden shed – and who, of course, jumps out to meet them with great joy and a wagging tail over his successful prank? It is the dog, who visibly enjoys the attention.
The Jaunty Gait of a Joker
Then there is also the bouncy and jaunty gait that the dog sometimes shows. When, for example, he has pinched something and comes dashing along with his loot, he switches into a gait as if in the circus, and his face asks mischievously how good he was. Then many a person really does have to ask themselves whether dogs really have no sense of humour or are simply following their instinct. I am sure that all sorts of things from a dog's life could be cited. You just have to look closely enough and observe the little joker in your home.
