Glucosamine for dogs
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar that is involved in the function of cartilage and joints in the dog's body. As a joint nutrient, it supports normal mobility and is ideal when the musculoskeletal system faces increased demands – for example in active dogs, large breeds or older dogs.
Glucosamine is one of the most important joint nutrients
Glucosamine for dogs is an amino sugar that is needed in the dog's body to maintain and build up joint cartilage, joint capsules and tendons. Glucosamine primarily regulates the ratio between cartilage formation and cartilage degradation and therefore ensures that an optimum amount of cartilage mass is always present in each of the dog's joints.
As the articular cartilage protects the dog's joints by, among other things, absorbing the shocks and vibrations caused by the animal's movements, this nutrient is an extremely important substance for the health of all joints. If the glucosamine level drops, joint wear and tear (arthrosis) can occur over time.
How can an undersupply of glucosamine occur?
The joint nutrient glucosamine cannot be produced independently by the dog's body and must be supplied to the joints. The synovial fluid (joint fluid) acts as a transporter. Sometimes an unbalanced diet, overloading or various breed-related causes can lead to an undersupply, which in turn can result in cartilage degeneration and various joint diseases.
The age of the dog is also a significant factor here, as the body's own glucosamine concentration decreases as the animal gets older, which means that many animals can suffer from joint problems, just like us humans, especially in the last stage of their lives. For this reason, every dog owner should ensure that the joint cartilage is optimally supplied with a supplementary dose of glucosamine in good time.
Osteoarthritis " the wear and tear of joints
If a joint cartilage regresses and the synovial fluid usually deteriorates at the same time, the dog's joint is left defenceless against the considerable stresses it is subjected to over time. As the reduction in cartilage mass also reduces the buffering capacity of the affected cartilage, the worst case scenario is damage to the joint in question. Bones rub against bones, nerves rub against nerves and pain can occur. This is known as osteoarthritis due to joint wear and tear.
Without treatment, such a disease can also be accompanied by stiffness in the joints. Glucosamine can be used to optimally counteract the onset of osteoarthritis. Affected joints are relieved by the regeneration of the joint cartilage, which usually minimises the symptoms of degenerative joint diseases.
Of course, successful treatment with a natural micronutrient such as glucosamine is only possible if the joint disease is not too advanced. Even the most effective preparation cannot repair a joint that has been destroyed by advanced osteoarthritis.
