Acacia fibre » tree resin as a dietary fibre
Trees of the genus Acacia grow in the dry savannah regions of Africa, above all in the Sahel. When the bark is injured, a viscous sap emerges that hardens in the air into amber-coloured lumps. For the tree this is a wound closure.
These lumps are collected by hand, cleaned, dried and ground. As gum arabic the same raw material has been in use for thousands of years, among other things as a binder in food and in ink.
What makes acacia fibre special
It is one of the soluble dietary fibres. It swells in liquid without becoming sticky and remains neutral in taste. Chemically it is a highly branched molecule made of sugar units that the body cannot use as energy.
What acacia fibre is valued for in your dog's diet
Acacia fibre reaches the large intestine undigested. It is a soluble fibre that gut bacteria break down slowly.
It adds to the daily fibre supply.
Fibre, not sugar
Although acacia fibre is built from sugar units, it does not behave like sugar. The branching of the chain makes it inaccessible to the digestive enzymes, so it provides hardly any usable energy and does not taste sweet.
Its particular feature is its low viscosity: unlike many other soluble fibres it barely thickens liquids. That makes it unobtrusive in recipes as far as texture and taste are concerned.
