Collagen is a structural micronutrient found in joints, intervertebral discs and connective tissue. As a component of strong, tear-resistant fibres, it contributes to the stability and resilience of soft-tissue structures. The structural protein collagen is an essential micronutrient for a dog's joint cartilage, intervertebral discs and connective tissue. Collagen has the important task of forming particularly tensile and at the same time elastic fibres, which in turn represent an essential component of the soft tissue mass. With the help of these collagen fibres, the cartilage and intervertebral discs of dogs are able to optimally fulfil their important protective function for the (vertebral) joints, cushion the loads acting on them and enable mobility.

Unfortunately, however, dogs' bodies are not able to produce the important collagen on their own and therefore every dog must regularly ingest this structural protein through their diet and, in the event of an age- or disease-related excess requirement or poor-quality feed (e.g. dry food), through supplementary feed . If there is an under-concentration of collagen, this can lead to a reduction in the buffering capacity of the cartilage and a decline in cartilage and subsequent joint wear (arthrosis). Intervertebral discs become brittle, lose their elasticity and a slipped disc can occur.

Collagen is also an important component of connective tissue, as well as ligaments and tendons. The connective tissue is also located in the area of the joints and, together with ligaments and tendons, contributes to their stabilisation. A patellar dislocation (the kneecap popping out), for example, can be stabilised by sufficiently strengthened connective tissue, as well as firm ligaments and tendons.

How does a collagen deficiency develop in dogs?

Collagen deficiency in dogs can be caused by very different circumstances, such as an inadequate diet of industrialised food or the natural ageing process. In some cases, low-quality industrial feed only contains a very low concentration of the structural protein collagen, which is important for cartilage, and many experts therefore consider this type of feed to be one of the greatest sources of risk for collagen deficiency in dogs. However, even if a high-quality feed is fed constantly, a deficiency can occur as part of the ageing process, as the collagen concentration decreases as the animal ages.
