Hyaluronic acid for dogs
Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, a long chain of sugar building blocks. Its most striking property is water binding: one gram can bind several litres of water. Our hyaluronic acid is obtained by bacterial fermentation.
Hyaluron » the molecule that holds water
Chemically, hyaluronic acid is a repeating sequence of two sugar units linked into very long chains. These chains strongly attract water and form a gel that can absorb pressure without deforming.
Unlike chondroitin, hyaluronic acid carries no sulphate groups. That is the essential difference between the two, even though they belong to the same class of substances and occur side by side in tissue.
Where it occurs in the body
Hyaluronic acid is found wherever tissue has to glide or cushion: in joint fluid, in cartilage, in the skin and in the vitreous body of the eye. It is built identically in all vertebrates, which is why there is no species-specific form.
What hyaluronic acid is valued for in your dog's diet
Hyaluronic acid is a main component of joint fluid, which keeps the joint surfaces supple.
Why fermented rather than animal-derived
Hyaluronic acid used to be obtained from animal tissue, for instance from rooster combs. Today bacterial fermentation is the usual route: selected bacterial strains produce the hyaluronic acid in a nutrient medium, after which it is separated and purified.
This has two advantages that count for a supplement fed daily. The result is free from animal starting materials, and the chain length can be controlled deliberately. It determines the properties of the hyaluronic acid and is therefore a quality feature.

We have worked with the same regular suppliers for many years. Their goods are tested for residues and are additionally examined by independent laboratories before they go into production.
