Calendula for dogs

Calendula for dogs

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as pot marigold, is a member of the daisy family with bright orange flowers. It owes its colour to carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin.

Calendula » the flower with the curled seeds

Calendula comes from the Mediterranean and can be found today in almost every cottage garden. Its German name, Ringelblume, refers to its seeds: they are sickle-shaped and curl up. The botanical name Calendula comes from the Latin calendae, the first day of the month, because it flowers for almost the whole summer.

In Europe it has been grown and used in gardens for centuries.

What the flower contains

The strong colour comes from carotenoids. Particularly important are lutein and zeaxanthin, two closely related yellow pigments from the xanthophyll group. In humans, they are deposited in the retina of the eye, in the so-called macula. That is why they are often mentioned in connection with the eyes.

The flowers also contain flavonoids, saponins and essential oils.

What calendula is valued for in your dog's diet

Lutein and zeaxanthin are yellow pigments of the flower and have antioxidant properties.

Why the extract matters

Lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble. The body absorbs them together with fat, which is why they are well suited to an oil-based formula. At the same time, they are sensitive to light and oxygen.

For complementary feed, the pigments are therefore extracted from the flowers and standardised to a fixed content. This keeps the amount the same from batch to batch, which would not be possible with dried flowers alone.

Origin and quality

We have worked with the same regular suppliers for many years. Their goods are tested for residues and are additionally examined by independent laboratories before they go into production.
