The dried rhizome of Chinese rhubarb (Rheum palmatum).
Rhubarb root for dogs
Rhubarb root comes from Chinese rhubarb (Rheum palmatum), also known as palmate rhubarb, not from the rhubarb in your garden. It is the rhizome that is used. In China it is called da huang, the great yellow one.
Rhubarb root » not the rhubarb from your garden
Chinese rhubarb grows in the highlands of western China and Tibet. It grows much larger than our vegetable rhubarb and has deeply cut, hand-shaped leaves, hence the epithet palmatum. With garden rhubarb you eat the stalks, while with Chinese rhubarb the strong rhizome, yellow on the inside, is used.
For centuries, rhubarb root was a valuable trade good and reached Europe via the Silk Road.
What the root contains
Its defining compounds are anthraquinones, which give the root its yellow colour. There are also tannins, which give it its tart, slightly bitter taste.
What rhubarb root is valued for in your dog's diet
Tannins give the root its tart taste.
From root to powder
The rhizome is harvested from plants that are several years old. It is peeled, cut into pieces and dried before being ground into a fine, yellowish brown powder. As with all roots, the composition depends on the age of the plant, its location and the drying process.
