Two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Their most important natural source is fish oil.
Fish oil and omega-3 for dogs
Fish oil is the most important natural source of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. It is obtained from oily cold-water fish such as anchovies, sardines and mackerel.
Omega-3 » fats the body cannot make itself
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids. They owe their name to the position of the first double bond in the chain, counted from the so-called omega end. The body cannot produce them itself, so they have to come from food.
A distinction is made between the short-chain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from plants such as flax and the long-chain forms EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) from the sea. Dogs can convert ALA into EPA and DHA only to a very limited extent. For them, plant-based omega-3 is therefore not an equivalent substitute for fish oil.
Where the omega-3 in fish comes from
Fish do not make EPA and DHA themselves. At the start of the chain are microalgae, which are eaten by small crustaceans, which in turn are eaten by fish. Through this food chain, the fatty acids accumulate in fish fat, especially in fish from cold waters.
What fish oil is valued for in your dog's diet
EPA and DHA are building blocks of cell membranes, including in the heart, brain and retina. As part of the diet, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids support normal skin and a normal coat.
Why purity and freshness are decisive
From the sea, fish take up not only nutrients but also undesirable substances. High-quality fish oil is therefore carefully purified, usually by distillation, which separates out heavy metals and other residues.
Freshness is just as important. The more double bonds a fatty acid has, the more easily it reacts with oxygen, and EPA and DHA have particularly many of them. You can recognise oxidised oil by its strong fishy, rancid smell. That is why fish oil is protected from light and air and combined with vitamin E as a natural antioxidant.

By a mild, not rancid smell. Oxidised oil smells strongly fishy and rancid. Protection from light and air, together with vitamin E as an antioxidant, keeps it fresh.
