Propolis » building material from the hive
The name comes from Greek and means roughly in front of the city, because bees narrow the entrance to their hive with propolis. Inside, they coat walls and combs with it.
They collect the starting material from the buds of poplars, birches, alders and conifers. Which trees are within reach determines the colour, smell and composition of the propolis, which is why it turns out markedly different depending on the region.
What propolis contains
Propolis consists of about half resins, plus wax, essential oils, pollen and traces of minerals. The characteristic group of substances are the flavonoids and phenolic acids, secondary plant compounds originating from the collected tree resin.

The flavonoids and phenolic acids in propolis have antioxidant properties.
For bees, it is the substance they use to seal their hive and keep it clean.
Raw, extract or powder
Raw propolis is sticky at room temperature and can hardly be processed. For further use it is therefore cooled and ground, or processed into an extract in which the valuable constituents are dissolved out and wax residues are separated off.
Because the composition depends so strongly on the region, consistent origin is particularly important with propolis. A change of beekeeper can noticeably alter the raw material.
