Calcium » a mineral, not a nutrient in the narrower sense
Calcium is a chemical element and, unlike vitamins, cannot be built up or broken down. The body can only absorb it, store it and release it again. For that very reason, what matters with calcium is less the sheer quantity than the ratio to phosphorus, with which it forms bone substance.
In nature calcium never occurs in pure form, always as a compound. Limestone, mussel shells, eggshells and bones consist essentially of calcium carbonate.
Which calcium compounds exist
Three are mainly used in complementary feed: calcium carbonate with the highest calcium content, calcium citrate as a compound with citric acid, and algal lime, obtained from lime-forming red algae, which brings further minerals with it.
What calcium is valued for in your dog's diet
Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to normal muscle function, normal signal transmission between nerve cells and normal blood clotting.
For calcium to do its job, it needs the right ratio to phosphorus and enough vitamin D.
Why the compound makes the difference
A statement on a pack can refer to two different things: the amount of the compound or the pure calcium it contains. Calcium carbonate consists of around 40 per cent calcium, calcium citrate of only about 21 per cent. Comparing two products therefore only makes sense if both figures use the same reference.
