Vitamin E is a collective term for eight related, fat-soluble compounds. The best known is alpha-tocopherol. Chemically they are radical scavengers, which is why vitamin E also protects fats from going rancid.
Vitamin E » eight compounds under one name
The vitamin E group comprises four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, each designated alpha, beta, gamma and delta. They differ only in details of their molecular structure, but markedly in their effectiveness. Alpha-tocopherol is the form the declaration is based on.
Naturally, vitamin E is found in vegetable oils, wheat germ, nuts and seeds, that is wherever the plant has to protect sensitive fats from spoiling.
Natural or nature-identical
A distinction is made between the natural form (RRR-alpha-tocopherol, often marked with a d-) and the synthetically produced one (all-rac, marked with dl-). Both contain the same molecule, but the natural one only in a single spatial arrangement, which the body uses better.
What vitamin E is valued for in your dog's diet
Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This is particularly important for cell membranes, which are rich in sensitive unsaturated fatty acids.
That is why vitamin E is an important partner when the food contains a lot of omega-3 fatty acids.
Vitamin E in feed, in two roles at once
Vitamin E is the reason fat-containing feedstuffs do not turn rancid within a few weeks. As a radical scavenger it protects the fats they contain, regardless of whether it is later also available as a nutrient.
From this follows a practical consequence: the more unsaturated fatty acids a formulation contains, for instance from fish or linseed oil, the more vitamin E it needs simply to protect those fats.
