Mushrooms used mainly for their constituents, such as reishi, shiitake, cordyceps and polyporus. Some, like shiitake, are also edible mushrooms.
Mushroom extracts for dogs
Functional mushrooms are mushrooms used mainly for their constituents, including edible mushrooms such as shiitake. Many of them have been used in Asia for centuries. What they have in common is a high content of beta-glucans.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) grows on dead hardwood and has a hard, lacquered, reddish brown cap. In China it is called lingzhi and has been regarded as a special mushroom there for more than 2,000 years. It is too woody and bitter to eat, so it is used as a powder or extract. Besides beta-glucans, it contains triterpenes, which are responsible for its bitter taste.
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is, after the button mushroom, one of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms in the world. It comes from East Asia and is traditionally grown on logs. Its beta-glucan lentinan is well known.
Cordyceps originally comes from the Tibetan Plateau, where in nature it grows on caterpillars in the soil and is accordingly rare and precious. For complementary feed, cordyceps is cultivated today.
Polyporus (Polyporus umbellatus), also known as umbrella polypore, grows on the roots of oaks and beeches. Its fruiting body consists of many small, branched caps. In Chinese tradition it is known as zhu ling.
What functional mushrooms contain
The cell walls of all mushrooms are made of chitin and beta-glucans, long-chain sugar compounds. Depending on the species, other typical substances are added, such as the triterpenes of reishi. Mushrooms also provide protein, B vitamins and ergosterol, the precursor of vitamin D.
What mushrooms are valued for in your dog's diet
The triterpenes of reishi have antioxidant properties.
Why extract and not powder
Chitin is very resistant and is hardly broken down in the digestive tract. To make an extract, the mushrooms are extracted with hot water, which releases the beta-glucans from the cell wall. An extract therefore contains mainly the beta-glucans from the cell wall.
We present another functional mushroom on a page of its own: Agaricus blazei, the almond mushroom from Brazil.
