The seed of flax (Linum usitatissimum). For thousands of years the plant has provided fibres for linen and seeds for food and oil.
Linseed for dogs
Linseed is the seed of flax (Linum usitatissimum), one of humanity's oldest cultivated plants. It provides mucilage, fibre and an oil rich in plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.
Linseed » from the flax field to the bowl
Flax has been cultivated for more than 8,000 years, originally in the Near East. Its stems provided the fibres for linen, its seeds food and oil. The botanical epithet usitatissimum means "the most useful".
The flat, glossy seeds are brown or golden yellow. The mucilage sits in their shell, the oil inside.
What linseed contains
Around 40 per cent of the seed is oil. More than half of it is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant form of omega-3 fatty acids. Hardly any other plant contains as much. There is also fibre, protein and lignans, secondary plant compounds that are particularly abundant in linseed.
The mucilage in the seed coat binds water and forms a soft gel. You can see this when you soak linseed: after a short time, the seeds are surrounded by a glassy layer.
What linseed is valued for in your dog's diet
The mucilage swells in the gut and binds water.
The alpha-linolenic acid in the oil supports normal skin and a normal coat.
Why crushed and not whole
Whole linseed has a very firm shell and often passes through the digestive tract unchanged. Only crushing opens the seed so that the oil and other compounds become accessible.
At the same time, the oil is delicate. The many double bonds of alpha-linolenic acid react easily with oxygen. Crushed linseed is therefore stored airtight and cool, and linseed oil is used as fresh as possible and protected from light.
