Iron for dogs
Iron is an essential trace element and the centre of the red blood pigment haemoglobin. Most of the iron in the body is found in the blood.
Iron » the element in the red blood pigment
In the haemoglobin of red blood cells, iron binds the oxygen that the blood transports around the body. In muscle, the related myoglobin performs a similar task. Iron is also a component of numerous enzymes.
One special feature: the body can hardly excrete excess iron. It therefore controls the amount through absorption in the gut.
Haem iron and non-haem iron
In animal foods such as meat and liver, iron is mainly present as haem iron, bound in the blood and muscle pigment. In plants such as pulses and green leafy vegetables, it occurs as non-haem iron. Haem iron is absorbed better.
The absorption of non-haem iron can be increased by vitamin C, while phytate, tannins and a lot of calcium inhibit it.
What iron is valued for in your dog's diet
Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin and thus to normal oxygen transport in the body. It also contributes to normal energy metabolism.
Because too much iron can be harmful, what matters is a supply that meets the need, not as much as possible.
Which iron compounds exist
In complementary feed, iron is used as a compound, for example as ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulphate or as an iron chelate. Ferrous fumarate is a compound with fumaric acid, a natural metabolic product, and has a high iron content.
