Vitamin C for dogs
Vitamin C, chemically ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin and one of the best known antioxidants. Unlike humans, dogs can make vitamin C themselves in their liver.
Vitamin C » a vitamin with a history
The story of vitamin C begins at sea. On long voyages, sailors fell ill with scurvy until it was discovered that citrus fruits protect against it. The substance was only isolated around 1930, for which the Hungarian Albert Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in 1937.
Humans, great apes and other dry-nosed primates, as well as guinea pigs, cannot produce vitamin C themselves. Dogs, however, can: they make it in the liver from glucose. In dogs, it is therefore not added to make up for a deficiency, but as part of a formula with other ingredients.
Which forms exist
Besides pure ascorbic acid, there are its salts, the ascorbates. Calcium L-ascorbate, for example, is vitamin C combined with calcium. It is less acidic than ascorbic acid, which is why it is also called buffered vitamin C. Both forms provide the same vitamin.
Natural sources rich in vitamin C include acerola, rose hip, sea buckthorn and peppers. You can find out more about rose hip on its own page.
What vitamin C is valued for in your dog's diet
Vitamin C is an antioxidant.
Because dogs produce vitamin C themselves, for them it is mainly a supplement, not a must.
Why vitamin C is so sensitive
Vitamin C is sensitive to light, air and heat. In fruit, its content therefore drops quickly after harvest, and a large part is lost during cooking.
As an antioxidant, it reacts readily with oxygen. It is precisely this property that makes it useful in formulas and also explains why it must be stored in protected conditions.
