The rhizome of Zingiber officinale, a tropical plant from Asia.
Ginger for dogs
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is the rhizome of a tropical plant from Asia and one of the oldest spice plants in the world. It is full of secondary plant compounds, above all gingerols.
Ginger » a root that is not a root
What we call ginger root is botanically a rhizome, an underground shoot. The plant comes from South and Southeast Asia and is one of the oldest spices in the world. It reached Europe along the trade routes as early as antiquity.
Today ginger is grown mainly in India, China and Nigeria. It has played an established role in Asian cooking for centuries.
What is in ginger
The most important constituents are the gingerols. They shape the typical taste of the fresh root and are among the secondary plant compounds. In addition, there are essential oils such as zingiberene, which provide the fresh, lemony aroma.
What ginger is valued for in your dog's diet
Gingerols and the shogaols that form from them have antioxidant properties.
Why drying changes the composition
When ginger is dried, some of the gingerols are converted into shogaols. Dried ginger therefore has a somewhat different composition from fresh ginger.
Complementary feed usually uses an extract. It ensures a consistent content of constituents. In the food, ginger is one of many ingredients and is mixed with the others. This cannot be compared with a piece of fresh ginger root from the kitchen.
