Vitamin D is fat-soluble and strictly speaking not a vitamin but a hormone precursor. For dogs one particularity is decisive: unlike humans, they can hardly produce it through the skin.

In humans, vitamin D is largely formed in the skin as soon as sunlight reaches it. Dogs do have this pathway too, but their skin contains very little of the precursor required for it. The contribution of sunlight is therefore small in their case.
For the dog, vitamin D is thus a nutrient that has to come from the food. This is one of the clearest differences between human and canine nutrition and a reason why more attention is paid to it in dog feeding.
D2 and D3
There are two forms: D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from mushrooms and yeasts, D3 (cholecalciferol) from animal sources such as fish oil and lanolin, the wool fat of sheep. D3 is the form a dog’s body can use better.
What vitamin D is valued for in your dog's diet
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus and thus to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to normal muscle function.
Why the amount counts more precisely here
As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D is stored in the body and not excreted like a surplus of water-soluble vitamins. It is stated in International Units (I.U.), and the amounts are small: one microgram corresponds to 40 I.U.
Vitamin D also does not act alone. It is closely connected with calcium and phosphorus, which is why these three are always considered together in a formulation.
