MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulphur compound. Sulphur is a bulk element and part of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, from which the body builds connective tissue and keratin, among other things.

Sulphur is one of the most common elements in the body. It is found in two of the twenty amino acids and thereby in countless protein structures: in skin and coat as well as in tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Unlike minerals such as calcium, sulphur is not present as a salt but firmly built into organic molecules.
MSM is such an organic form. Chemically it is a derivative of DMSO and consists of one sulphur atom, two oxygen atoms and two methyl groups. It is a white, crystalline powder, odourless and readily soluble in water.
Where MSM occurs naturally
MSM is part of the natural sulphur cycle. Marine algae release a sulphur-containing precursor into the air, where it is converted and returns to earth with the rain. Traces of MSM are therefore found in vegetables, fruit, milk and even in rainwater, though in very small amounts.
What MSM is valued for in your dog's diet
MSM is an organic sulphur compound. Sulphur is a component of amino acids such as methionine and cysteine and thus of cartilage, tendons, skin and coat.
Why MSM is produced rather than extracted
Only minute quantities of MSM could be obtained from plants. For complementary feed it is therefore produced deliberately and then purified by distillation.
In this case that is the better route: a distilled MSM reaches a purity of over 99 per cent and therefore contains no accompanying substances from a plant starting material. For a substance that is fed daily, this consistent purity is worth more than the label plant-derived. We therefore look for distilled rather than crystallised MSM.
