Chondroitin sulphate is a glycosaminoglycan, a long chain of sugar building blocks. It is a natural component of cartilage tissue, where it binds large amounts of water. Our chondroitin comes from cattle.

Chondroitin sulphate consists of many sugar units strung together, carrying negatively charged sulphate groups. This charge attracts water. A single molecule can bind many times its own weight in water, and that is exactly what makes the substance so useful in nature: water cannot be compressed.
Chondroitin therefore occurs wherever tissue has to withstand pressure, in cartilage as well as in tendons, ligaments and skin.
What chondroitin is obtained from
Cartilaginous tissue serves as the raw material. Cattle, pig, shark and poultry are common sources. Our chondroitin comes from cattle. The cartilage is gently broken down, the chondroitin sulphate is extracted, purified and dried.

How to recognise quality
With chondroitin, purity is the real question. The content is stated as a percentage, and batches of different origin can differ considerably. The molecular size also varies, depending on how the raw material was processed.
