Degenerative myelopathy is a slowly progressing breakdown of the spinal cord, mainly in older large breeds, and often begins with weakness and coordination problems of the hindquarters. It cannot be cured, and the diagnosis belongs in a vet's hands. Alongside this, nutrients that support the nerves and muscles such as vitamin B and vitamin E can meaningfully support the normal nerve function.

What is degenerative myelopathy (DM)?

Degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that occurs particularly in older dogs. It leads to a gradual deterioration of motor function and can ultimately lead to paralysis. Causes of degenerative myelopathy

The exact cause of DM is not yet fully understood. It is suspected that a genetic predisposition plays a role. The disease is particularly common in certain breeds such as the German Shepherd, Boxer and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. A defective gene that codes for the protein SOD1 has been linked to the disease. This genetic factor leads to degeneration of the nerve fibres in the spinal cord, which disrupts nerve signals.

Diagnosis and Therapy

The diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy is usually made through a combination of clinical examination, neurological assessment, and the exclusion of other diseases. Imaging techniques such as MRI or CT, as well as special genetic tests, can be used to support the diagnosis.

A cure for DM is currently not possible. Therapy therefore focuses primarily on alleviating symptoms, supporting mobility, and maintaining quality of life. Physiotherapy and exercise therapy, targeted aids such as carrying aids or special harnesses, and an adapted environmental design can make everyday life easier for both dog and owner.

A balanced supply of micronutrients can play an important supportive role in dogs with degenerative myelopathy. B vitamins, in particular, are a focus, as they contribute to maintaining normal nerve function and energy metabolism. It is important to neither overtax nor undertax the dog – small adjustments can make a big difference in everyday life.
