What is a patellar luxation and how does it occur?
Patellar luxation, the lateral protrusion of the kneecap from its guide, is a stifle joint disorder that occurs mainly in small dogs. It can be congenital, i.e. inherited, or develop as a result of malalignment of the stifle joint.
Typically, in less severe cases (1 and 2), the kneecap usually springs back into the correct position independently and without pain, whereas in more severe cases (3 and 4), manual correction or even surgical intervention is necessary.
Risk factors and consequences
Although small dog breeds are particularly affected by this condition, larger dogs can also have a hereditary predisposition to it. In addition to genetic factors, diet, obesity and weak muscles also play a role in the development of patellar luxation. In the long term, the condition can lead to pain, restricted movement and even joint wear and tear, including arthritis, which can significantly impair the affected dog's quality of life.
