A very old plant genus (Equisetum arvense) that stores a particularly large amount of silicic acid. An old German name for it is Zinnkraut.
Horsetail and silica for dogs
Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense) and silica have one thing in common: both are natural sources of silicic acid, and therefore of the trace element silicon.
Horsetail » a living fossil
Horsetails are among the oldest plants on Earth. More than 300 million years ago, their ancestors grew as forests the height of trees, from which part of our hard coal was formed. Today's field horsetail, by contrast, is only knee-high and grows along field edges and in damp meadows.
Its old German name Zinnkraut, "pewter herb", tells of its silicic acid content: it was once used to scour pewter tableware, because the silicic acid in the stems acts like fine sandpaper.
The green, sterile summer shoots are used. Reliable identification is important, because the related marsh horsetail looks similar but is poisonous. That is why horsetail is botanically checked before processing.
Silica » silicon from the earth
Silica refers to finely ground silicon dioxide. It is often obtained from diatomaceous earth, the deposits of the shells of tiny fossil diatoms. It is a white, taste-neutral powder.
What horsetail is valued for in your dog's diet
Horsetail and silica provide silicic acid.
What makes silicon special
After oxygen, silicon is the second most common element in the Earth's crust. In the body, it is a trace element and is found mainly in connective tissue, skin, hair and claws. Plants such as horsetail build silicic acid into their cell walls, giving themselves strength.
