Yes. Blueberries are among the fruits that dogs can safely eat.
Blueberry for dogs
The blueberry is a berry from the heather family. It owes its deep blue colour to anthocyanins. By the way, dogs can also eat blueberries fresh.
Blueberry » forest or garden
The wild bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) grows wild in Europe's forests. It is small, and its flesh is blue all the way through. That is where the name blueberry comes from, and anyone who picks them ends up with blue fingers.
The larger cultivated blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) comes from North America. It is blue only in the skin, and its flesh is pale. Accordingly, it contains considerably less pigment than the wild bilberry.
What the blueberry contains
Its characteristic compounds are anthocyanins, blue to violet plant pigments from the flavonoid group. They are water-soluble, and their colour depends on acidity: in an acidic environment they look reddish, in a neutral one blue. Blueberries also provide tannins, fruit acids, fibre and vitamin C.
What blueberry is valued for in your dog's diet
Anthocyanins give the berry its blue colour, belong to the flavonoids and have antioxidant properties.
And by the way, fresh blueberries are a treat that dogs are allowed to eat.
Why an extract matters
Fresh berries consist mostly of water and spoil quickly. Complementary feed therefore uses an extract that concentrates the pigments and is standardised to a consistent anthocyanin content. Because anthocyanins are sensitive to light and heat, the extract is gently dried.
