Astaxanthin for dogs
Astaxanthin is a red pigment from the carotenoid group. Its richest natural source is the blood rain alga (Haematococcus pluvialis), a freshwater microalga.
Astaxanthin » why salmon are red
Astaxanthin is the pigment that turns salmon, prawns and crayfish red. None of these animals makes it themselves. They take it up through their food, and at the start of this food chain is the blood rain alga.
The alga gets its name because it can turn rain puddles and bird baths red. Normally it is green. When it comes under stress, for example from strong sunlight or a lack of nutrients, it retreats into a resistant resting form and stores large amounts of astaxanthin in the process.
What makes astaxanthin special
Like lutein and zeaxanthin, astaxanthin is one of the xanthophylls. Its molecule is elongated and has special ring structures at both ends. Chemically, it is a radical scavenger, a substance that reacts with reactive oxygen compounds. For the alga, this is a protection against too much light.
Astaxanthin is fat-soluble and is absorbed together with fat.
What astaxanthin is valued for in your dog's diet
Astaxanthin has antioxidant properties. Its long molecule spans the entire cell membrane.
From alga to powder
The blood rain alga is grown in closed systems known as photobioreactors. It only turns red during the stress phase and is then harvested.
Its resting cells have a very firm cell wall. To make the astaxanthin accessible, this wall is broken open after harvesting and the alga is then gently dried. This step largely determines the quality of the powder.
