Black cumin for dogs
Black cumin (Nigella sativa) belongs to the buttercup family and, despite its name, is not related to cumin. It is the small black seeds that are used. They are characterised by their fatty oil and their essential oil containing thymoquinone.
Black cumin » the seeds of blessing
The plant originates from Western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean. Today it is grown mainly in Egypt, Turkey and India. Its delicate, pale blue flowers develop into inflated capsules in which the angular, jet black seeds ripen.
In the Middle East, black cumin has been known for centuries as "Habbat al-Baraka", the seeds of blessing. Seeds of the plant were even found as a burial gift in the tomb of Tutankhamun. In the kitchen, they are known as a spicy topping on flatbread.
What the seeds contain
About a third of the seed is fatty oil, made up mostly of unsaturated fatty acids, above all linoleic acid. There is also a small proportion of essential oil, whose best known component is thymoquinone. It gives black cumin its typical, slightly bitter and peppery taste. The seeds also provide protein, fibre and minerals.
What black cumin is valued for in your dog's diet
Black cumin provides unsaturated fatty acids. Its thymoquinone has antioxidant properties.
Why freshly crushed matters
Essential oils are volatile. As long as the seed is whole, its hard shell protects them. Once it is ground, they begin to evaporate, and the unsaturated fatty acids come into contact with oxygen.
That is why black cumin is only crushed shortly before further processing. Whole seeds, on the other hand, often pass through the digestive tract unchanged because the shell is not broken down. Crushing is therefore the step that makes the compounds accessible.
