Polyradiculitis is an inflammatory condition of several nerve roots that can lead to sudden weakness and even paralysis, usually beginning at the hindquarters. It should be checked by a vet without delay. Alongside recovery, nerve nutrients such as vitamin B and vitamin E can meaningfully support the normal nerve function.
Let's start with the main form of the disease, polymyositis. It is a rare autoimmune disease that can occur in dogs. It is an inflammatory disease in which the dog's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissue in the body. A subtype of polymyositis is polyradiculitis, in which the dog's peripheral nervous system is affected.
Unfortunately, the exact causes of polyradiculitis in dogs are not yet fully understood. It is assumed that the disease is triggered by a misdirected immune system that attacks the peripheral nerves. A genetic predisposition could also be responsible for the fact that some dogs are more susceptible to the disease than others.

Polyradiculitis often manifests as weakness or paralysis, particularly in the hind limbs. Dogs may have difficulty standing or walking and often appear generally weak. Typical symptoms include an unsteady gait, trembling, or a dragging gait of the hind legs. In some cases, muscle tone can be significantly reduced, requiring intensive veterinary diagnosis and care. In some cases, swallowing difficulties or breathing problems may also occur.
Diagnosis is made through a thorough clinical examination, supported by blood tests, imaging techniques, and sometimes special neurological tests. The course can vary greatly from individual to individual: While some dogs recover fully after intensive therapy and care, others are left with permanent weakness. Early, targeted veterinary treatment is crucial to avoid complications.
Certain vitamins - particularly those from the B complex - play a key role in nerve health and function. B vitamins support the normal function of the nervous system and, as part of a balanced diet, can make an important contribution to physiological nerve regeneration.
In everyday life, a stress-free environment, an adapted exercise program, and, if necessary, supportive care (e.g., when getting up, eating, or grooming) are important. Body weight should be kept stable to maintain muscle strength and mobility as best as possible.
