An essential trace element that the body cannot make itself and can hardly store.
Zinc for dogs
Zinc is an essential trace element. The body needs it only in small amounts, but can neither make it itself nor store it to any significant extent.
Zinc » small amounts, many tasks
Zinc is a component of hundreds of enzymes and proteins in the body. Particularly large amounts are found in skin and coat, muscles and bones. Because there are hardly any stores, a regular supply through food is what counts.
Natural sources of zinc include meat, offal, eggs, pumpkin seeds and nuts.
Which zinc compounds exist
In complementary feed, zinc is never present in pure form, but always as a compound. Common forms are inorganic ones such as zinc oxide and zinc sulphate, as well as organic ones such as zinc gluconate or zinc chelates, in which zinc is bound to amino acids. They differ in their zinc content and in how well they dissolve.
What zinc is valued for in your dog's diet
Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and coat. It contributes to the normal function of the immune system and is involved in protein and carbohydrate metabolism.
What affects absorption
How much zinc is actually absorbed depends heavily on the rest of the diet. Phytate from cereals and pulses binds zinc, as does a high calcium content. Zinc and copper are also antagonists: a lot of one can slow the absorption of the other. That is why trace elements in a formula are always considered together.
