Green-lipped mussel for the dog's joints
The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) lives exclusively off the coasts of New Zealand. It owes its name to the green rim of its shell. It is known for its glycosaminoglycans and its unusual fatty acid profile.
Green-lipped mussel » a mussel that exists only once
The green-lipped mussel is endemic to New Zealand, meaning it occurs naturally nowhere else. It is farmed in aquaculture in the coastal bays, where it settles on suspended ropes and lives solely on what the water brings.
That makes it a raw material whose quality depends directly on water quality. New Zealand therefore monitors the farming areas at state level.
What the green-lipped mussel contains
It provides glycosaminoglycans, the same class of substances as chondroitin and hyaluronic acid, plus proteins, minerals and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Among these is eicosatetraenoic acid, a fatty acid that occurs in this form in hardly any other food.

Why drying is decisive
The valuable constituents of the mussel are heat-sensitive. If the mussel meat is dried hot, part of them is lost without this being visible in the finished powder.
For green-lipped mussel powder the processing method is therefore the actual quality feature. Gently freeze-dried material retains considerably more of the original constituents than heat-dried material, but costs many times more to produce.
