The rosehip is the fruit of the dog rose (Rosa canina). It is among the native fruits richest in vitamin C and also contains fruit acids, pectin and carotenoids.

The dog rose grows at forest edges and in hedgerows throughout Europe. Harvesting takes place after the first frosts, because the fruits are then softer and sweeter. The Latin epithet canina incidentally dates from antiquity, when the root was used against the bites of rabid dogs.
What is in the rosehip
It is known for its high content of vitamin C, which exceeds that of citrus fruits many times over. Added to this are carotenoids, which give the red colour, pectin as a soluble dietary fibre, fruit acids and galactolipids, a fat compound found above all in the seeds.

Why drying determines the vitamin content
Vitamin C is sensitive to light, air and heat. With hot drying a considerable part is lost, and the finished powder looks unchanged.
For rosehip powder, gentle drying is therefore the decisive quality feature. A further difference lies in whether only the flesh is used or the whole fruit including the seeds, since the galactolipids are located predominantly in the seeds.
