Allergies in dogs

DOG FIT by PreThis® Image

Many supposed allergies in dogs are intolerances linked to gut health. On this page you will find which ingredients our supplements contain – and which connections between diet, gut and immune system are being discussed.

Origin of the ingredients

If your dog reacts to certain ingredients, it helps to look at their origin:

  • Chondroitin, gelatine capsules and colostrum: from beef
  • Collagen: from pork
  • Glucosamine: from crustaceans
  • Green-lipped mussel: from mussel meat (may be an issue with fish allergies)
  • Lamb, horse, insects or chicken: not contained in our products
  • Vegan products: contain no animal ingredients

You will find the full composition for every product in the shop under “Ingredients”.

What can be behind intolerances

The rise in allergies

In recent years the number of dogs with allergies and intolerances has risen noticeably. One factor being discussed is the composition of industrially produced food. Around 90 % of available food types – including wet food – fall into this category.

Allergy or intolerance?

Many supposed allergies are in fact intolerances. A large part of a mammal's immune system sits in the gut. If the gut flora is out of balance or the intestinal lining is irritated, the immune system may react more sensitively – up to reactions that resemble an allergy.

Leaky gut – the permeable intestinal barrier

In this context the so-called “leaky gut” is often described: a permeable intestinal barrier through which substances can enter the bloodstream and occupy the immune system. Discussed accompanying symptoms are diarrhoea, itching and skin irritation.

The role of the food

Transit time and composition of the food influence the environment in the gut. After a change of diet many dog owners report that symptoms improve. Whether this applies in an individual case should always be clarified with a vet or a nutrition consultant – particularly if an allergy has been diagnosed.

The path to suitable nutrition

A balanced diet is easier to achieve than many assume. Our food check gives you a first orientation if you are unsure what belongs in the bowl.
