A macromineral, a mineral that occurs in larger amounts in the body, above all in the bones.
Magnesium for dogs
Magnesium is a macromineral, a mineral that the body contains in comparatively large amounts. Most of it is found in the bones.
Magnesium » from leaf to bone
Magnesium is everywhere in the plant kingdom: it sits at the centre of chlorophyll, the green leaf pigment. Green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains are therefore among the foods rich in magnesium.
In the body, most of it is stored in the bones, and the rest is distributed across muscles, organs and body fluids. There, magnesium is involved in a wide range of enzyme reactions.
Which magnesium compounds exist
Like calcium, magnesium is never used in pure form in complementary feed, but always as a compound. Common ones are magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate and magnesium carbonate. Magnesium oxide has the highest magnesium content, so a small amount of the compound is enough for a high content.
As with calcium, a figure on the packaging may refer either to the compound or to pure magnesium. Only figures with the same reference value can be compared.
What magnesium is valued for in your dog's diet
Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and the normal function of the nervous system. It is involved in numerous enzyme functions and contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
Magnesium and calcium
Magnesium and calcium are closely linked. Both are found in the bones and influence each other, including during absorption in the gut. That is why they are always considered together in a formula. You can find out more about calcium on its own page.
