Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. It occurs in two forms: as ready-made retinol from animal sources and as beta-carotene, the plant precursor that the body first has to convert.
Vitamin A » two forms, one vitamin
Retinol is the form the body can use directly. It is found above all in liver, fish oil and egg yolk. Beta-carotene, by contrast, is the orange-red pigment of carrots, pumpkin and dark green leafy vegetables and first has to be split in the body.
One difference from humans matters here: cats cannot convert beta-carotene at all, dogs only to a limited extent. For a dog, beta-carotene is therefore not an equivalent substitute for retinol but rather an addition.
Why fat-soluble makes a difference
Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed with dietary fat and stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, an excess is therefore not simply excreted. With vitamin A the stated amounts should be observed particularly carefully.
What vitamin A is valued for in your dog's diet
Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. It contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes and to the normal function of the immune system.
It also plays a role in cell specialisation, that is, in the growth and renewal of tissue.
How vitamin A is measured
It is stated in International Units (I.U.) or in retinol equivalents. Both figures can be converted into one another but are not the same. Anyone comparing two products should make sure the same unit is stated.
Vitamin A is sensitive to light and oxygen. During processing it is therefore often embedded in a protective coating so that the declared content is retained until the end of the shelf life.
