No Dog Wants Too Many Baths
Understandably, some dogs react with displeasure when they are bathed, treated with modern shampoo and blow-dried. For the sake of the coat’s health, this is something worth reconsidering critically. It is therefore no wonder if the animal seems offended or sad after such a procedure. I would like to point out for consideration that a dog out in the open would never take a bath with artificial cleaning agents. What smells pleasant to our human noses can represent a real burden for the highly sensitive senses of the dog.
When a bath makes sense for the dog
Of course there are good reasons for a bath, such as an infestation with fleas. It also happens that a dog gets into a mud hole or even into a dung heap. In such cases, cleaning is quite appropriate. We recommend, however, that you refrain from blow-drying. A dog’s coat has the property of drying on its own, and that is far gentler than hot air. Air that is too warm dries out the hair and makes it shaggy and brittle.
- Avoiding unnecessary baths to preserve the natural protection of the skin
- Refraining from the hairdryer to spare the hair structure and the skin
- Preserving the important insulating properties of the undercoat
- Respecting the natural individual scent for the canine social fabric
The natural protection of a dog’s coat
There is of course nothing to be said against medically necessary baths. Nevertheless, one should be rather sparing with the use of shampoo, even with special dog shampoo. The hair of our dogs has, in cold and in warmth, a thermoregulating quality that works best without chemical additives. Cleaning agents can, moreover, harm the warm and water-repellent undercoat and impair the animal’s well-being. Surely no one wants to do that to their beloved companion.
In addition, one should for once put oneself in the dog’s position when it smells of roses instead of dog. In canine society this could lead to irritation. Neither among the fellow dogs in the neighbourhood nor at other encounters is an artificial scent perceived positively. A dog should simply smell like a dog and not like a flower.
