DOG FIT by PreThis® partner: Julia Welz – orthopaedic & rehab technology for animals
We are delighted with the guest article by Julia Welz, owner of Tier Agil – orthopaedics and rehab technology for animals from Sundern. Enjoy the read.
My name is Julia Welz. I am a qualified engineer and a master craftswoman for orthopaedic and rehab technology. After an apprenticeship as an orthopaedic and rehab technician, I completed my university entrance qualification (Abitur) and then finished my degree in orthopaedic and rehab technology at the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Gießen. During my studies I sat my master craftsman's examination at the Federal Technical School for Orthopaedic and Rehab Technology in Dortmund.
Even as a child I wanted to learn precisely this profession, and I have not regretted it for a single day. Because it is wonderful to be able to help people with physical problems so that they can cope with their everyday life better again. For this reason I wanted to make it my mission to help animals with physical problems too, to make their everyday life easier and to relieve pain in a caring way.
A dog owner out of passion
I own two Giant Schnauzers myself and do dog sport with both, such as agility, versatility sport for working dogs and rescue dog work. Both are nationally qualified for deployment in area and rubble searches. Xara has also completed the international deployment examination for rubble searches, in which I am also active as a trainer. I have taken part successfully several times in the World Championship for rescue dogs. Tenth place with Hexe and second place with Xara, each in the area search, were the best results so far.
Since rescue dog work is physically and mentally demanding work for both human and dog, my dogs receive appropriate physiotherapy as well as strength and conditioning training. In addition, I of course also support my older dog at thirteen years of age, in order to cushion minor signs of ageing and to keep her as muscularly and cognitively fit as possible.
Orthopaedic aids for our animals
Why orthopaedic and rehab-technology aids for animals? For people there has long been the possibility of being provided with bandages, prostheses, orthoses and wheelchairs. Since 2013 I have offered a large selection of orthopaedic-technology aids for animals. I make the aids for each animal individually, to measure and from a plaster cast – just as in the manufacture for people. Because every animal is just as individual and special as we are.
The aim of my work is, through the aids I make, to preserve, promote and restore the health and quality of life of your animal. Because of the abundance of different clinical pictures and injuries, a personal consultation and presentation of the animal is indispensable. A solution that is only roughly fitted almost never fits well and often causes more problems than it helps. Cooperation with the veterinary practice and with animal physiotherapists is also advisable in order to achieve the best possible results.
- Individual manufacture for the respective animal from a plaster cast
- Close coordination with the veterinary practice and physiotherapy
- Personal consultation on site and precise fitting of the aids
- Preservation and restoration of mobile quality of life
