The rhizome of Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family from South Asia. Because of its colour, it is also called a yellow root.
Turmeric for dogs
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a yellow root from the ginger family, native to South Asia. It is the rhizome that is used. It owes its bright yellow colour to curcumin.
Turmeric » the golden root of India
Turmeric comes from South Asia and is grown today mainly in India, which supplies most of the world's harvest. Underground, the plant forms a branched rhizome that is brownish on the outside and deep orange inside.
In India, turmeric has been a spice and a dye for thousands of years. It gives curries their colour and was also used to dye fabrics.
What turmeric contains
Its defining compounds are the curcuminoids, above all curcumin. They make up only a small part of the root, but are responsible for its colour. There are also essential oils with the typical turmerones, which give it its warm, slightly earthy smell.
What turmeric is valued for in your dog's diet
Curcumin has antioxidant properties.
Why extract and fat play a role
Curcumin is fat-soluble and barely soluble in water. In Indian cooking, turmeric is therefore traditionally prepared with oil or ghee and often combined with black pepper.
Because the curcumin content of the root varies from harvest to harvest, complementary feed often uses an extract. It is standardised to a fixed curcuminoid content.
A practical note: turmeric stains strongly. Yellow marks on light fur or fabrics are normal.
