Psyllium husk for dogs
Psyllium husks are the seed husks of Indian plantain (Plantago ovata), known internationally as psyllium. They consist largely of mucilage and can bind many times their own volume in water.
Psyllium » a plantain from India
The plant belongs to the plantain family and is related to ribwort plantain. It is grown mainly in western India, in the state of Gujarat. The seeds are also known as flea seed, a name they owe to their appearance: small, oval and glossy, a little like fleas.
It is not the whole seed that is used, only its thin husk. The husk is separated from the kernel in mills and cleaned. What remains are light, pale flakes.
What makes the husks special
Psyllium husks consist mostly of fibre, a mixture of soluble and insoluble parts. The most important component is a mucilage called arabinoxylan. When it comes into contact with water, it swells into a soft gel.
It is this swelling power that makes psyllium husks so special: even a small amount binds many times its weight in liquid.
What psyllium husk is valued for in your dog's diet
The mucilage swells in the gut into a soft gel. This binds water and keeps the intestinal contents soft.
Why husks and not seeds
Almost all of the mucilage sits in the husk, while the kernel contributes hardly any. Pure husks therefore swell considerably more than ground whole seeds.
Because the husks bind so much water, one simple rule applies: fresh drinking water should always be available for your dog.
