Frankincense trees grow in dry, rocky regions of East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and India. For harvesting, the bark is carefully scored. The tree closes the wound with a milky sap that solidifies in the air. These resin tears are collected by hand a few days later.
There are several species that differ in scent and composition: Boswellia sacra, Boswellia papyrifera, Boswellia frereana and Boswellia serrata. For complementary feed it is above all the Indian species Boswellia serrata that is common, and it is the one we use.
What frankincense resin contains
The resin consists of essential oils, mucilages and resin acids. Characteristic are the boswellic acids, a group of triterpene acids found only in this plant genus. Their proportion differs markedly by species and origin, which is why the botanical species on the label says more than the word frankincense alone.
What frankincense is valued for in your dog's diet
Boswellic acids are characteristic of the resin. The quality of the extract is measured by their content.
From resin to extract
Raw resin is difficult to dose because its content of boswellic acids varies considerably. For complementary feed it is therefore processed into a standardised extract: the resin is purified, the valuable constituents are concentrated and adjusted to a consistent content.
That is the decisive difference between ground raw resin and a tested extract, and the reason we use the latter.

We have worked with the same regular suppliers for many years. Their goods are tested for residues and are additionally examined by independent laboratories before they go into production.
