Ginseng for dogs
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is a member of the ivy family from East Asia. It is the root that is used, which often resembles a human figure. Its defining compounds are the ginsenosides.
Ginseng » the man root
The Chinese name rénshēn means man root, because the branched root is reminiscent of a figure with arms and legs. Ginseng has been known in China and Korea for more than 2,000 years.
Wild ginseng has almost disappeared today. It is grown mainly in Korea and in northeastern China, in partial shade under protective roofs.
What the root contains
Its defining compounds are the ginsenosides, a group of saponins named after the plant. There are dozens of different ones. Their content is regarded as a measure of quality. The root also contains polysaccharides, peptides and essential oils.
What ginseng is valued for in your dog's diet
Ginsenosides are the characteristic constituents of the root and the measure of its quality.
Why ginseng grows for so long
Ginseng is a very slow-growing plant. The roots are only harvested after four to six years, because the ginsenosides accumulate over the years. Afterwards, the soil is exhausted for many years and needs to recover.
Depending on processing, a distinction is made between white ginseng, which is simply peeled and dried, and red ginseng, which is steamed before drying and takes on its reddish colour in the process. Asian ginseng should be distinguished from American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), a separate species.
