Holiday with a Dog – Tips!

Dog enjoying the holiday on the beach

The loveliest time of the year is approaching, yet for dog owners the holiday often begins with a headache: where to put the four-legged friend? Hotels are often not set up for dogs, other guests quickly feel disturbed, or dogs are not allowed at all. The list of hurdles is long.

But there is a solution that is usually the most relaxed for human and animal: the pet-friendly holiday home. So that the holiday really becomes a rest, we have put together here the most important tips and checklists for you.

Preparation is everything: papers & health

A holiday home offers freedom and independence. But before you set off, the formalities have to be right – especially for trips abroad.

This must go in the luggage:

  • Microchip: For trips within the EU, identification by chip is compulsory. Check in advance whether the registration (e.g. with Tasso) is up to date.
  • Documents: The blue EU pet passport (with a valid rabies vaccination!) is absolutely required. To be on the safe side, also take the number of your liability insurance with you.
  • Travel first-aid kit: Have your vet put together a small emergency kit (tailored to age, breed and weight). Think of remedies for diarrhoea or travel sickness.
  • Nerve food & mobility: Travelling often means stress or unusual strain (long hikes). For support we recommend vitamin B for strong nerves as well as our proven joint nutrition for active holiday days.

Packing list: from food to the tick tweezers

Nothing is more stressful than having to search for the usual food at the holiday destination. Changes of food can lead to digestive problems, especially under stress.

This is what you should remember:

  • Food supply: Take enough of the usual dry or tinned food for the entire travel period.
  • Water for the journey: Vital especially in heat and traffic jams in the car.
  • Walkies equipment: Lead, collar (with address tag/holiday address!), poo bags.
  • Comfort: Its own basket or the familiar blanket help the dog to feel at home more quickly in the unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Care & protection: Towels (for wet paws), tick tweezers, flea/tick protection and, if necessary, a muzzle (in some countries compulsory on public transport).

Checklist for the holiday home: what needs to be clarified?

Not every home in which dogs are "allowed" is really "dog-friendly". It is best to clarify these questions before booking:

  • The garden: Is the property completely and escape-proof fenced in?
  • The surroundings: How far is it to the beach? Is there a designated dog beach or extensive meadows nearby?
  • The rules: May the dog come to the beach? (Note: in Denmark, for example, there is often a lead requirement on the beach in summer.)
  • Facilities: Are bowls provided or does everything have to be brought along?
  • Costs: Is there an increased final cleaning fee?
  • Emergency: Where is the nearest vet? Save the number and address in your phone before departure.

Our conclusion:
With the right preparation and a suitable holiday home, the holiday becomes an unforgettable experience for the whole family – including the furry nose. Those who book in good time often find great bargains in a dreamlike location. We wish you a good trip!
