Is birch toxic to dogs? Tree, pollen and birch sugar

Small dog sitting on a forest path between birch trees If you want to know whether birch is toxic to dogs, you need to tell three things apart: the tree itself, its pollen and birch sugar. We found no veterinary reports of poisoning from birch leaves or bark. Like other pollen, birch pollen can trigger an allergy in some dogs. Birch sugar, also called xylitol, is genuinely dangerous: even small amounts can cause life-threatening low blood sugar in dogs.

Tree, pollen, birch sugar: what is what?

TermWhat you should know
Birch (tree)Leaves, twigs and bark. We know of no veterinary source reporting poisoning of dogs by birch. If your dog eats larger amounts of plant material and seems unwell afterwards, call the practice anyway.
Birch pollenPollen in spring. Like other pollen, it can trigger an environmental allergy in dogs.
Birch sugar (xylitol)Sugar substitute in many sugar-free products. Toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. An emergency.

Why is birch sugar so dangerous for dogs?

Birch sugar is another name for xylitol. In people it has hardly any effect on blood sugar. In dogs, however, it triggers a rapid, strong release of insulin. As a result, blood sugar drops sharply. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, this can happen from about 0.1 grams of xylitol per kilogram of body weight. For a 10 kilogram dog, around one gram is already enough. From about 0.5 grams per kilogram, some dogs can also suffer severe liver damage.

Low blood sugar can start within 30 minutes. If the xylitol is in chewing gum, however, it may only show after 12 to 18 hours. Liver damage often only becomes visible after one to two days.

Where is birch sugar found?

  • Sweets: Sugar-free chewing gum, sweets and mints.
  • Food: Some peanut butter, baked goods, including homemade cake with birch sugar.
  • Care products: Toothpaste and oral care products for people.
  • Medicine: Lozenges and chewable tablets, vitamin gummies and some sugar-free syrups.
  • Tip: Check the ingredients list. Xylitol appears as xylitol, birch sugar or E 967.

How do you recognise birch sugar poisoning?

  • Early: Vomiting, weakness, wobbling and tiredness.
  • Severe: Seizures or loss of consciousness.
  • Later: With liver damage, lethargy, vomiting and yellowish mucous membranes.

What to do if your dog has eaten birch sugar?

Go to the vet straight away, even if your dog still seems lively. Take the packaging with you so the practice can estimate the amount. Don’t make your dog vomit yourself, only the practice should do that. Your dog usually stays there for observation, and his blood sugar is checked over many hours. If low blood sugar is treated quickly, the outlook is good. If liver damage is already showing, it becomes serious.

Best of all, don’t let it get that far: keep chewing gum, sweets and medicines out of reach, including in coat pockets and handbags.

Birch pollen: can my dog be allergic?

Yes, dogs can react to pollen too. A large analysis of more than 5,000 blood samples from dogs in Denmark, Norway and Sweden examined birch pollen among others. For tree pollen, sensitisation was higher in spring and summer. Beech accounted for the largest share, while alder and birch played a smaller role.

Whether itching or reddened skin is caused by a pollen allergy or something else is for the vet to find out. You can read more in our guide to allergies in dogs.

And birch leaves as a home remedy?

In the past, birch leaf tea or birch tar was recommended as a home remedy for dogs, including on skin and wounds. We found no reliable evidence for this in dogs. If your dog has skin problems or a wound, have it looked at by the practice rather than treating it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can my dog chew on birch twigs?

We know of no poisoning by birch. As with any wood, though, splinters can injure the mouth and throat. Give your dog chew toys made for the purpose instead.

Is birch sugar the same as xylitol?

Yes. Birch sugar is a trade name for xylitol, also called E 967. It is toxic to dogs, whatever it was made from.

How much birch sugar is dangerous for dogs?

From about 0.1 grams per kilogram of body weight, blood sugar can drop dangerously. For a small dog, that is a very small amount. So go to the practice whatever the amount.

Are cats at risk too?

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, xylitol poisoning has so far only been described in dogs. Even so, sweets don’t belong in the bowl.

More important than the birch tree in the park is what is lying around in the kitchen, handbag and bathroom.
