Wobbler syndrome in dogs

A dog owner who notices abnormalities in their animal's movement sequences or also a recurring trembling should definitely consult a vet. The dog may be suffering from a serious impairment of the spine, which is triggered by severe damage to the nerves in the spinal cord and can in turn be traced back to various causes.
Genetic factors and burdens
The experts primarily name various hereditary factors and also infections in the spinal cord of dogs as possible triggers for impairments of motor function. The term 'wobbler' comes from the English language and means something like 'to wobble', which illustrates the symptoms of this canine condition very well. Through the damage in the area of the spinal cord, as already mentioned, severe disturbances in the dog's motor function can occur. Severe trembling of the animal, too, is not rarely traced back to an impairment of nerve conduction. Furthermore, paralysis or incontinence can also occur through the damage in the spinal cord. Here an immediate veterinary diagnosis is essential.
Support with neurological impairments
The treatment of spinal impairments proves to be quite difficult in many cases and is generally carried out according to the respective trigger for the nerve damage in the dog's spinal cord. If the impairment was triggered by an infection, this must of course first be treated. In most cases, with an infection in the area of the spinal cord the surrounding tissue swells strongly and exerts pressure on the nerves. If the infection is eliminated, this pressure on the spinal cord can be reduced and an improvement of the symptoms may set in.
An operation is often necessary
Should this nerve disorder result from nerve damage, an operation can be scheduled, which, however, does not always bring the desired success and also carries numerous dangers for the dog. In general, the dog owner should pay attention to an optimal supply for their dog's nerves. The needs-based supply of nutrients supports the normal function of the nerve pathways.
