The first-aid kit for your dog

Minor health problems in dogs can often be very well supported by the dog owner themselves, without consulting a vet, using care and first-aid measures. For this it is of course necessary that the dog owner also has the required aids to hand. For this reason it is advisable to put together a small first-aid kit for the dog, with the help of which small ailments in your four-legged friend can be attended to. But as a matter of principle, of course, in the case of long-lasting and also serious health problems, a vet should always be consulted! Below is a small list of the important preparations and medical instruments for the canine first-aid kit.

Which preparations belong in the canine first-aid kit?

In general, the dog's initial care by the owner should only be carried out with over-the-counter and, ideally, gentle preparations. Preparations intended for humans must never be used for this, as these medicines have too high a concentration of active ingredients and can endanger the animal's health! The dog owner should therefore always inform themselves about the ideal preparations for the dog via the pharmacist or vet.

The canine first-aid kit can, for example, be equipped with the following preparations:

• A remedy for calming, against stress and anxiety (e.g. Bach flowers)
• a mild disinfectant for wound treatment
• a homeopathic remedy to support regeneration (e.g. Arnica C30 globules)
• an approved, over-the-counter preparation for the nutritional support of normal joint function
• milking fat or petroleum jelly for the care of the dog's paws
• Ringer's solution for rinsing out the dog's wounds and eyes
• zinc ointment to support wound healing
• an over-the-counter remedy to support normal digestion (in the case of severe or long-lasting diarrhoea, go to the vet immediately!)
• preparations for the nutritional support of the dog's vitality

What else belongs in the first-aid kit for your dog?

In addition to preparations, the first-aid kit should also contain some medical items and dressing material, with the help of which the dog's initial care can be carried out. The following therefore belong in the canine first-aid kit:

• a pair of tweezers for removing thorns from the paw
• a tick remover
• animal-hair scissors
• a fever thermometer with a flexible tip
• sterile gauze bandages
• sterile wound compresses and swabs
• adhesive tape (Leukoplast) for securing a dressing
• a pair of bandage scissors
• a support bandage with a bandage clip

Finally, let it be mentioned once again that the canine first-aid kit is solely for the dog's initial care and the treatment of small wounds! In the case of serious complaints that persist over a longer period, and also with severe injuries, the vet must always be consulted!
