My dog does not obey me – what can I do?

Confident leadership and mutual trust – why your dog does not listen to commands.
Quite a few dog owners are noticeably overwhelmed by their animals, because the dogs simply do not listen to the owner's signals. This can create difficult problems and stressful situations for animal and human alike. On this topic, the basic rule is that no dog disregards its owner's commands out of malice. Punishing the dog is therefore most certainly the wrong way.
The owner as a reliable partner
In most cases the reasons for ignoring commands already lie in the dogs' upbringing and thus in their early years. Many dog owners let their young animals get away with too much, do not assert themselves sufficiently and do not show the animal clear boundaries. Every dog owner has to be aware that the dog must recognise them as the leader. It must not come to the point where the owner has to conform solely to the dog's habits.
Who's the boss here, dog or human?
It may sound somewhat abstract, but in many families it is actually the case that the dog is the true boss of the house. In this position it often does not see why it should listen to its owner's commands. Especially when the dog is an alpha male, the owner has to make it clear to the animal very early on who is in charge. This should, however, never be done with punishment or violence, but with a healthy self-confidence and the necessary consistency.
A dog trainer can provide valuable help
If a dog owner is overwhelmed by their animal, it is advisable to bring in a competent dog trainer. An experienced coach, with their practised eye, can immediately see where the problem between the owner and their dog lies. Such an expert can be found in almost every region nowadays. If necessary, the owner can also turn to a local dog club with their problem.
- Set clear boundaries as early as puppyhood
- Avoid punishment and build trust
- Establish yourself as the confident leader of the pack
- Use expert help with persistent problems
The most important thing remains the realisation that violence and punishment achieve little in most cases. On the contrary, such behaviour often even stokes the mistrust between the dog and its owner. A harmonious relationship is based on understanding, patience and clear communication that the animal can understand.
