Yeast Infection in Dogs – What to Do?
On every dog's skin live various yeasts, which can under certain circumstances multiply strongly and trigger a fungal infection. In principle, a yeast infestation in dogs can indicate an increased nutrient requirement of the body's own defences. Vets therefore usually advise a combined treatment, within which both the yeasts are combated and the dog's vitality is supported.
How does a yeast infestation in dogs show itself?
As a rule, a yeast infestation in dogs shows itself through a musty body odour of the animal in combination with skin redness and crusting. The dog scratches constantly because of the strong itching that the overgrowth of yeast on the skin triggers. A yeast infestation in dogs not uncommonly occurs when the animal is already suffering from another strain, such as an infectious disease or liver or kidney conditions, whereby the dog's natural defences are considerably challenged. If a yeast infestation on a dog's skin is not treated properly, damage to the skin can result from it.
How is the yeast condition treated?
The yeast condition of a dog's skin can be treated with the help of appropriate medication, shampoos or ointments. Depending on the dog's general condition, however, treatment of the yeast condition can drag on for a very long time, and in some cases many animals have to be treated by the vet with the appropriate medication for the rest of their lives. As mentioned at the outset, the dog owner should also ensure that the body's own defences, which the yeast condition can indicate, are supported again and effectively supplied with essential nutrients in their work.
Are there supportive measures against yeast infestation?
To support normal skin health, the dog owner should check their animal's skin regularly. If necessary, the dog is also bathed from time to time with an antifungal shampoo. The animals' ears must also be checked as part of the care, because an overgrowth of yeast is often found there too! Ongoing nutritional support of vitality is generally advisable for the dog's overall health!
