Dog Fleas and Flea Saliva Sensitivity

Dog with a skin reaction

Fleas can be a considerable burden for dogs, as the parasites trigger skin reactions. In addition, more and more dogs show an increased sensitivity to flea saliva, which brings additional challenges for the affected animals. But how does flea saliva sensitivity manifest itself in dogs, and what can the owner do to help?

What causes flea saliva sensitivity in dogs?

Flea saliva sensitivity in dogs develops when the animals react sensitively to certain substances in the saliva of fleas. As fleas feed on the blood of their host and therefore bite, the flea saliva gets into the dog's skin. There it can trigger reactions. In most cases the sensitivity shows itself through increased itchiness, and the affected animal scratches and licks the areas concerned, which in turn can lead to skin lesions. Frequently the dogs lose their coat hair in the places where the skin reactions occur more strongly due to flea saliva sensitivity, making redness and skin lesions visible.

What can be done to support skin health?

First and foremost, the owner must of course do something about the fleas, for which special flea products and dog shampoos against fleas are suitable. Flea combs, too, can render very good service to a limited extent, but the eggs of the fleas are not removed by combing alone! Should the flea saliva sensitivity occur more strongly and the dog show symptoms, it is of course absolutely advisable to consult the vet. Should bacterial skin infections arise due to the skin reactions, vets often advise doing something for the nutritional support of the animals' vitality.
