Worth knowing about tick season
The question arose whether dogs can be vaccinated against early-summer meningoencephalitis and whether the vaccine for humans might be used. Such cases of illness are rather rare in dogs. So far, cases are known mainly in large dog breeds. It is possible, however, that the illness is sometimes not correctly diagnosed.
Dogs react to the virus less sensitively than humans
It is suspected that a weakening of the immune system must precede an infection. Using the human vaccine is not a recommendation. In principle we are rather sceptical about vaccinations, although it always depends on the individual case. Dogs that are used for hunting, for example, should be caringly vaccinated against rabies. A city dog often does not need such a vaccination at all.
It is, however, certainly an important task to caringly prevent an infestation. Bacteria such as Borrelia and Babesia are only transmitted after 12 or 24 hours. The virus that causes early-summer meningoencephalitis, however, is transmitted immediately. Certain preparations to be applied to the skin are a widespread solution in Europe. The liquid is applied directly to the skin. With long-haired dogs, you have to take care to caringly part the hair in order to reach the skin properly. Whether you want to subject your dog to these chemical agents is something each person must decide for themselves. Our dogs do not receive such chemical agents at all, as the side effects and the possible long-term consequences are often in no good proportion to the benefit.
There are effective home remedies such as citrus oil and coconut oil
In addition, these remedies are a harmless alternative. What all dog owners should do in any case is to rub the animal down after every walk with a microfibre cloth, or to caringly comb the dog with a flea comb. This catches the ticks that have not yet bitten in. It can take several hours for the little parasites to find the right spot. Until then, they merely crawl around on the dog.
- Daily, caring checking of the coat after the walk
- Use of natural oils to repel parasites in everyday life
- Strengthening the immune system as a natural, caring barrier
- Avoidance of unnecessary chemical burden on the whole organism
