A Great Many Pounds
The diagnosis of being overweight applies here not only to many people, but increasingly to pets and above all to dogs. Every second four-legged friend is considered too fat these days. In most cases the causes are identical for owners and dog. It is a matter of too little exercise and too many calories. In our daily consultations we see how important a healthy body weight is for long-term vitality.
Being overweight in animals is a disease of affluence
Unfortunately the problem is becoming ever greater. The German Animal Welfare Association also points this out. A study by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich states that 52 percent of dogs and cats too have too much fat on their ribs. This has fatal consequences. Excess pounds can reduce the life expectancy of the four-legged friends by up to 2 years. According to veterinarians, the most common accompanying conditions are diabetes, liver damage, cardiovascular diseases, an increased cancer risk and the overloading of the joints.
Large dogs are particularly at risk of joint problems
Because of their size, these animals are already heavily strained in their joints. So every kilogram less is a real relief. Dogs with short noses also suffer extremely from being overweight. The fatter they become, the harder they find it to breathe. As a rule, misunderstood love and above all excess and ignorance play a big part in overfeeding. Our expertise helps to understand these connections in a caring way.
- Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in everyday life
- Heavy strain on the joints and the sensitive spine
- Considerably reduced life expectancy and lower vitality
- Impaired breathing, especially in brachycephalic breeds
What helps if your dog should be suffering from being overweight
We recommend a combination of sufficient exercise, healthy food and, where appropriate, a reduction in calories in order to give your four-legged friend a healthy shape again. Nutrition should always meet actual needs. There is only a limited selection of high-quality and at the same time low-calorie dog food. You should really only use treats in a targeted way and never for in between. Expert advice on nutrition is an extremely valuable factor here in caringly promoting health in the long term.
