Can all dogs swim?

A happy dog visibly enjoying swimming and cooling off in the water Every dog can swim if it wants to. In fact, almost all dogs master this ability from birth. Some are a little more skilful at it and others need a bit more practice. Put simply, one could say that no dog sinks.

Diverse sports for human and dog

There are many sports that you can do together with your dog. But hardly any activity gives the animals as much joy as swimming. This is of course provided that the four-legged friend was accustomed to the water from an early age and has had no negative experiences whatsoever. Dogs that seem a little clumsy at first can, with the right caring encouragement, become real water lovers. In summer in particular, the water offers an ideal opportunity for the necessary cooling of the entire organism.

Swimming as optimal training for the joints

Swimming is an optimal sport for dogs. Due to the significantly reduced body weight in the water, this form of movement is an extremely joint-friendly training. Therefore, dogs of all ages and especially older animals should practise swimming as a sport. This applies equally to dogs with joint pain or animals in which targeted muscle building is caringly required. A quarter of an hour of swimming training challenges the dog far more than an hour-long walk on the leash. In addition, the cardiovascular system is sustainably strengthened and the nerves are reactivated. The positive aspects range from an improved gait to general emotional well-being.

Safety and health when bathing

Dogs that swim regularly are usually more vital and healthier animals. As with us humans, however, it also applies to dogs that swimming on a full stomach is by no means advisable. When it is extremely hot outside and the animal's body is overheated, it must first be allowed to cool down slowly. As a precaution, you should take off the dog collar or the harness before going into the water so that no paw can get tangled in it.

  • Joint-friendly movement thanks to reduced body weight in the water
  • Strengthening of the cardiovascular system for more endurance
  • Ideal cooling on hot summer days for the organism
  • Promotion of muscle building in seniors and sick dogs

With flowing waters it is a duty, just as with us humans, to caringly pay attention to the respective current conditions. Jumping into the water in an uncontrolled way is likewise not a recommendation, as there could be sharp or pointed objects hidden on the bottom. Of course, you should consistently observe existing bathing bans for dogs and always be caringly considerate of other bathers.

This article serves as general information and as caring promotion of your dog's fitness through natural movement in the water.
