Dog joint problems from overbreeding

Fashion dogs and the consequences of overbreeding for canine health.
More and more so-called fashion dogs show serious signs of years of overbreeding. In general, these developments have an extremely negative effect on the animals' health. The best-known example is undoubtedly the German Shepherd, in which years of breeding can lead to a malposition of the hip joints. But other breeds, such as the Pug and the French Bulldog, show not only joint strain but also further signs of overbreeding.
What does overbreeding mean for the dog?
Overbreeding generally refers to the physical and health condition of a dog that is considerably impaired by breeding to the criteria of the breed standard. The breed standard for dogs sets out precisely which external characteristics a dog must fulfil. The respective breeds are then bred towards these criteria, despite the considerable health challenges that can arise as a result. To take up the German Shepherd example once more: a typical characteristic of this breed is the spine sloping down towards the hind legs, which is why dogs of this breed need support for normal joint function.
Effects beyond the musculoskeletal system
The other examples already mentioned, the Pug and the French Bulldog, have been bred over generations towards a flat muzzle, which can result in considerable breathing difficulties for the animals. In these breeds, mucus drainage is also no longer reliably ensured because of this overbreeding. In fact, many owners of a Pug or a French Bulldog have to intervene regularly and support the animals' airways. A typical sign of the serious overbreeding of these two breeds is the extremely loud snoring during sleep.
What dog owners can do today
Genetic peculiarities that have arisen through years of breeding of various breeds can unfortunately hardly be reversed. Dog lovers who are interested in a breed with genetic predispositions must therefore be aware that the animals may sooner or later face challenges. For this reason, every dog owner should actively consider the nutritional support of the joints and connective tissue.
- Supports normal joint function under genetic strain
- Promotes agility and general mobility
- Secures the supply of important joint nutrients
- Ideal for breeds with special physical requirements
