Diarrhoea in cats is a frequently occurring problem that can be stressful both for the cat itself and for its owners. There are various reasons why a cat can develop diarrhoea, and it is important to understand the cause in order to take effective measures to deal with the problem and to support digestion. Diet and food intolerances
Diet plays a decisive role in your cat's digestion. A sudden change in food, poor food quality or a food intolerance can cause diarrhoea. To minimise diet-related problems, you should use high-quality food without unnecessary additives (pay attention to the declaration) and carry out any change of food slowly.
Parasites and infections
Parasites such as worms or protozoa can cause diarrhoea in cats. Infections through viruses or bacteria are also potential triggers. Regular veterinary check-ups can help to minimise these risks.
Stress and anxiety
Cats are susceptible to stress and anxiety, which can have a negative effect on their digestion. To avoid digestive disorders due to stress, it is important to create a safe and familiar environment for the cat and to watch for signs of discomfort.
Catnip and other plant substances
Peppermint and some other plant substances can cause digestive disorders in some cats. Make sure that the cat has no access to such plants, and consult the vet if you have concerns.
What can you do to support your cat?
If a cat has diarrhoea, it is important to stay calm and monitor it carefully. In most cases, the diarrhoea disappears on its own. However, you can also take a few steps to help the cat:
- Fluid intake: Make sure the cat drinks enough water so as not to become dehydrated. Wet food can also contribute to fluid intake and should generally be preferred.
- Easily digestible food: Offer the cat easily digestible food such as chicken or rice. Avoid hard-to-digest foods during the diarrhoea.
- Veterinary help: If the diarrhoea lasts longer than two days, is mixed with blood or is accompanied by other symptoms, a vet should be consulted immediately.
